weirdcombos kitchen remodel update: now we’re talking!

Since our last update, the kitchen has really come along. The cabinets are all installed with only some minor pieces missing (shelves in one of them, so I guess not that minor, and those cool door stoppers that prevent slamming for about half of them). The bamboo floor is in, minus the finishing molding. I painted the whole thing. The countertop folks have come to measure everything, so the new counters are on the way. The electrician plans on finishing the lighting in the next few days. We’ve scheduled the plumber for round one: to fix and connect the leaking water line to the refrigerator ice maker. So more or less, things are on track.

We think that it is looking fantastic, especially by comparison to the old one. I can’t believe how much storage space there is now! And the light colors really make it seem large.

We’ve still to figure out the tile backsplash, but hopefully that’s it.

Wow.

I never thought that this day would come.

It hasn’t been totally problem free. The cabinet installers accidentally punctured a hot water line behind one wall that had to be repaired ASAP. And it has been psychologically draining for all of us, though Hegui and me more than Clarence. The worst part, aside from the dreadful inconvenience, has been all the dust. That coupled with the springtime pollens, Clarence’s dander and not really being able to do much housekeeping for a month has sent my allergies into overdrive. I’m sneezing constantly, have runny eyes, headaches and now stomach upset from all the toxic allergy medications that I’ve been ingesting on a regular basis. Poor me, I know!

Sometime soon we should be kitchen-ready. For now we can enjoy the new microwave oven and the old, full stove and ovens. That is real progress. Running water remains a dream, but has suddenly become a realistic one. So until the next update.

    Hey Stevie,

You guys did a fantastic job picking out the colours and appliances! Everything looks beautiful so far! Can’t wait to see the final product. Sorry about your allergies. Hope the job gets done soon so you don’t have to suffer too much.

Oh, it is looking good! Isn’t it such a great feeling when you have kitchen that is fun to cook in or just to walk into…I’m sure you’ll be whipping up some amazing meals! Your Bulldog is so darn cute, I love him! If we lived closer, I’d dog sit while you were traveling! We are big dog lovers, but at the moment we dont’ have one…soon…once my little guy (2 1/2 get a tad older.) We used to have two yellow Labs, but they were friends with a couple of Bulldogs in the city!

It already looks gorgeous and it’s not even finished! I am so jealous of all your cabinet space. Smart thinking to double stack the upper cabinets. You can never have too much storage. And Clarence looks rather pleased with the progress too!

Oh you must be so happy! I am so thrilled for you. I love all that sotrage space (something I dont have–we decided to go for only bottom cabinets). Imagine all the amazing things you will cook and bake there and happy times you are going to have there. I am smiling just thinking about it.

I can tell Clarence approves of the bamboo flooring, a nice place to rest the caboose, indeed. Lovely kitchen, congrats, mine is next, once I accept a month or two of lathe and plaster in my oatmeal and propane camp stove on the back porch.

Congrats on the new kitchen. Someday, for me, but in the meantime apartment living.
Clarence seems to be seeking whatever is being prepared on the countertop.
Like you, I love those frosted cabinet doors. Very nice indeed.
