So, it’s late at night. It’s very cold. Tension about tomorrow is high. They’re all in the wilderness together: Edward, Bella and the “rival” Jacob. So how do they all end up in one small tent, with Jake wrapped around Bella in a tiny sleeping bag while Edward speaks aloud of Jake’s sexual thoughts about….Bella, is it?
Boys! Make love not war!!!
Let’s just take a look at what Steph has to say in “Eclipse” chapter 22:
“Please!” Edward hissed. “Do you mind!”
“What?” Jacob whispered back, his tone surprised.
“Do you think that you could attempt to control your thoughts?” Edward’s low whisper was furious.
“No one said you had to listen,” Jacob muttered, defiant, yet still embarrassed. “Get out of my head.”
“I wish I could. You have no idea how loud your little fantasies are. It’s like you’re shouting them at me.”
“I’ll try to keep it down, “Jacob whispered sarcastically.
There was a brief moment of silence.
“Yes,” Edward answered to an unspoken thought in a murmur so low I barely made it out. “I’m jealous of that, too.”
“I figured it was like that,” Jacob whispered smugly.
I am very innocent. So what exactly is happening here? Is the “unspoken thought” a size thing? What are the facts? They’re all in the tent together, right? Bella is conked out. Jacob is wrapped all around her, daydreaming about sex I suppose. And Edward is inside Jacob’s mind, along for the ride. So is Edward jealous? He says that he is. The part that I don’t get is about what?
The dialogue between the two rambles on for a bit about jealousy-this, jealousy-that. I still just don’t get it. Jake and Bella are in bed together. Hence Edward is jealous. Maybe that makes sense? But let’s look at the bigger picture: Jake and Bella are both clothed and, as usual Bella is half dead and mostly asleep. Not really that erotic. What’s to envy here? To me, the most striking part of this portrait is Edward reading Jacob’s every thought and them having an intimate heart-to-heart about it. Edward even says to Jake a bit later, “I can think of many more things at one time. Of course, that means that I’m always able to think of you….” Could Edward and Jake have an unfulfilled man crush?

Yes, he could have a man crush cause how could he be jealous of a fully clothed Bella! That was a hot segment! I think Jacob is full of all kinds of sexual energy. It’s possible Edward would have wanted to be with Jacob!

First if all, two men fighting over me…I would definitely be faking the whole sleeping thing!
Secondly, a horny, virgin 17 year old who’s got the best of both worlds. One man drooling over her keeping her warm and safe. Another one hot, sexy, dangerous, mysterious and always keeping her on her toes (literally). Come on now, Bella has it good. She was definitely awake. I think she secretly played dumb, but enjoyed the whole idea of having Jacob AND Edward. In reality, she was keeping them on their toes. I personally enjoy always having a back up plan!
I agree that Bella was not “dead asleep.” How else would she have heard of all of this? I still think that she’ playing with fire here. Teenage guys are very unpredictable. Plus I’m not sure that she has quite as much self-control herself to be keeping the guys on their toes.
