Texas cheese board

We’ve friends in Texas who sent us this incredible Texas-shaped cheese board a few months ago as a gift. Thank you so much, Sara and Tracy! We’d been saving it for a special, or Texas-worthy occasion. Last weekend we used it for the first time for a party in honor of my parents’ visit from back East.

I lived in Dallas/Fort Worth for about seven years after college. Those were the days! I had hair on my head, was thin and could eat as much Tex-Mex as I wanted without really worrying about my waistline or cholesterol! Ah!

Texans are proud of their state and for good reason. Aside from its sheer size (I read long ago that Texas is physically larger than France and that the D/FW International Airport is larger than the island of Manhattan) it has a long and fascinating history with a complex culture all its own. Here are some cool factoids that I found on 50 States:

Texas is the only state to have the flags of 6 different nations fly over it. They are: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, and the United States.

Texas is the only state to enter the United States by treaty instead of territorial annexation.

Sam Houston, arguably the most famous Texan, was actually born in Virginia. Houston served as governor of Tennessee before coming to Texas.

The first word spoken from the moon on July 20, 1969 was Houston.

Texas includes 267,339 square miles, or 7.4% of the nation’s total area.

Amarillo has the world’s largest helium well.

Jalapeno pepper jelly originated in Lake Jackson and was first marketed in 1978.

Dr Pepper was invented in Waco in 1885. The Dublin Dr Pepper, 85 miles west of Waco, still uses pure imperial cane sugar in its product. There is no period after the Dr in Dr Pepper.

The Texas-shaped cheese board comes from A Heirloom. They make lots of other states, too.

Thanks again, Sara and Tracy! We love you guys. Hope you visit again soon.
