seafood guide at Sun Fat entrance
I’ve been a big fan of Sun Fat for fresh seafood for years, even before reading the rave reviews on Yelp! I think that it’s a Chinese name, which is cool to see in the Mission surrounded by all of the shops with Spanish names, discount clothing stores and banks and trendy restaurants. It seems very multicultural. The place is a non-descript hole-in-the-wall on Mission Street between 22 and 23rd Streets: so it’s in the heart of the Mission. And it’s true what those yelpers say, it is sometimes tough parking in that area but generally worth it.
They have an amazing array of fresh, fresh frozen and live seafood at Sun Fat. I’ve never been disappointed with the quality of their fish and shellfish. I haven’t gone out for the Dungeness crab like the other commentators have, though I‘ve been there once when someone was having a large party and ordered several of the scary, crawly things. It’s a full service shop, so for that particular customer, the staff was systematically chopping the live crabs in half with this huge cleaver! It sort of freaked me out, to be honest.

I’m not that much of a crab person, so I usually stick to more conventional fish and shellfish. I really like their clams, wild shrimp, calamari and mussels. In the fish department I have bought king salmon, halibut, wild rock/black cod and whole sardines that they’ll clean right there for you at no additional cost. It’s always all super fresh. The lobsters and crabs look good swimming around in their tanks. They have a wide selection of fresh oysters for any of you who might shuck them at home. Right now that’s beyond my skill level but I do enjoy oysters so I might learn how to do that sometime and report back.

I was there the other day and bought some little neck clams and pre-cleaned calamari tubes and tentacles to make a special Fra Diavolo pasta dish, Miami style. It couldn’t have tasted better!
The prices are always very, very, very reasonable. The quality is much better than the supermarkets, Whole Foods included, as well as several of the seafood markets that I’ve tried in the Richmond District. I highly recommend Sun Fat!

I like Sun Fat too! What do you think the name means? It’s weird for a seafood market. I got shrimp there. It’s really good!
