I love the San Francisco Open Studios each October. Have you been?
my newest Chalini aquisition, The Bat Eater
Throughout the month, there are artist studios open to the general public every weekend. It’s a lot of fun to browse around, admiring the art, sipping a glass of wine or munching on a snack or two. We’ve been going almost every October since moving here seven years ago from New York.
One of my favorite weekends in the one when the Bay Area Printmakers have their show at Fort Mason, as I really admire the work of Javier Chalini. Just the other day I acquired a print, “The Bat Eater.” I’ve a few others as well from previous years. Chalini seems like a really nice guy, and I find his work very appealing. I’m especially fascinated by the sinuous figures that are sometimes not quite human, often with mythological themes. Whatever these figures are doing feels so mysterious, urgent, intense yet sublime. The stuff seems so primary process, somehow. The first print that I ever got was “Bathing with Muses,” which I still admire regularly years later.

Of course, there are lots of other wonderful artists on display this month. Halloween weekend is the close for Open Studios this fall, but it usually ends with a blowout. The Hunter’s Point Shipyard studios open to the public then. It is a must see!
