We came across this extremely beautiful melon at the Alemany Farmers Market the other day. The farmer selling it called it a “guava melon.” Neither of us had ever heard of that before, though we did know that there are a myriad variety of melons out there. This one has a yellow and green striped skin with a pale greenish-orange-ish flesh. What’s so striking about this fruit is the intense aroma that it exudes. It smells almost exactly like fresh ripe guava!
Ours was very ripe when we opened it. The fruit was sweet and very juicy. It tasted somewhat like honeydew. I had been hoping for a guava flavor. Oh well. It was wonderful in its own way. We bought another one a week later at the UN Plaza Farmers Market, we liked it so. They’re in season now, so I’m sure that you’ll have no problem finding them. Let us know.

omg this melon is amazing. I had the same experience at the same market today with the aroma, I almost walked by this stall and was stopped by the intense perfume. I bought one then came back and bought two more. I thought it smelled like passion fruit. The taste is almost too sweet, but I love it. I had to look it up immediately.
Glad to see they’ll be in season a bit longer.
