2008 Williams Selyem Yorkville Highlands Pinot Noir Weir Vineyard
We tried the 2008 Weir Vineyard the other day as part of our Wms-Selyem pinot immersion project. It was easy to drink but unraveling the label was something else all together. Neither of us had ever heard of Yorkville Highlands, let alone the Weir Vineyard. Well, the Internet to the rescue, once again!
Located between Anderson Valley and Alexander Valley in Mendocino County, Yorkville Highlands is home to slightly more than twenty growers, which makes it pretty small. The official YKVHLDS site says, “There are currently just 41 wines available made from Yorkville Highlands grapes; all produced in very limited quantities.” Fortunately they grow pinot.
Bill and Suki Weir own the Weir Vineyard which, according to Wms-Selyem is planted to two clones: the Wadenswil 2A and the Romanée-Conti. We thought that the wine was a transparent dusty red to purple color with a nose of raspberry, cherry and fresh loam. Medium bodied with some spice on the attack, we noted bright red fruit with bracing mineral notes and a pleasantly long finish. This was good drinks. Wms-Selyem recommends some aging. Fortunately I have more so I will try that and report back later.
