2007 Domaine de la Mordorée Lirac La Dame Rousse

Heguiberto picked out this bottle of La Dame Rousse or “the Redheaded Lady” last week while we were tasting Rhônes at K and L.

I tried to learn a bit more about Domaine de la Mordorée after we enjoyed this quite delicious red. According to their site, “mordorée” means “woodcock.” Apparently woodcocks migrate over the property annually. It sounds like the owners made a fortune selling “ventilated suits” before they devoted themselves full-time to the Domaine in 1986. I wonder what a ventilated suit is exactly?

Anyway, they’ve a really cool and quite soothing video of one of them plowing the vineyard with a draft horse.

Here’s their philosophy:

Our code of ethics is profoundly based on respecting the gifts of nature through our soils and landscapes. This code of ethics is consequently applied to all the stages of production, ensuring that future generations may live in harmony with our heritage. We are but passers-by on Earth, our presence is ephemeral and we are not here to exhaust our resources but to develop our land’s riches.

Here’s their philosophy on wine growing:

Wine growing is one of the rare activities in the world in which it is not necessary to be a huge corporation to be well-known. On the contrary, we can remain small craftsmen and propose unique wines in small quantities, for a clientele of passionate wine lovers who don’t care for standard products but who seek wines with a genuine character, a powerful identity.

I flatter myself by thinking that I am part of “a clientele of passionate wine lovers” but it sure sounds good.

The Redheaded Lady was a translucent purple red with a nose of raspberry and freshly cut grass. Medium to full bodied, it was peppery, had red fruit and a creamy supple mouth-feel that we all enjoyed.

At $25 a bottle, this wine is a relative bargain. I ordered a case already.
